Frequently asked questions

What is a matrix band used for in dentistry?

A matrix band acts as a temporary wall where part of the tooth is missing, so the filling material can be packed and shaped. It is removed once the filling has set. Sectional bands are used when the cavity includes the side of a back tooth (a Class II restoration).

What is the difference between sectional matrix bands and Tofflemire bands?

A sectional band covers only the side of the tooth being filled, while a Tofflemire band wraps around the whole tooth. Sectional bands are usually held by a sectional ring and a wedge, not by a Tofflemire retainer. Many clinicians use them for Class II composites because the ring separates the teeth slightly, which helps them build a tight contact. Tofflemire bands are often chosen for larger fillings that involve more than one side of the tooth. See our Tofflemire Matrix Bands - 4 Styles - 144/pk.

Which sectional matrix band size do I need?

Pick by tooth: 3.5 mm for deciduous (baby) teeth, 4.5 mm for premolars, 5.5 mm for molars, and 6.5 mm with extension for molars that need extra height. If you are not sure, the kit gives you 25 of each size.

What is in the sectional matrix band kit?

The kit (EBK-M05) holds 100 bands: 25 each of the 3.5 mm deciduous, 4.5 mm premolar, 5.5 mm molar and 6.5 mm molar-with-extension sizes, for C$38.99. Single sizes are sold 50 per box as refills.

How do you place a sectional matrix band?

A common sequence is band, then wedge, then ring. Slide the band between the teeth around the area being restored, insert a wedge at the gum line to hold the band against the tooth, then place a sectional ring to keep the band in place. Follow your own technique and the instructions for your ring. We carry dental wedges and sectional rings.
