Frequently asked questions
What is a prophy cup?
A prophy cup is a small, flexible cup that holds prophy paste and polishes the teeth during a dental cleaning (prophylaxis). A slow-speed handpiece turns it through a prophy angle or attachment.
What is the difference between latch, screw-on and snap-on prophy cups?
The main difference is how the cup attaches. Latch cups have a metal shank that locks into a latch-type attachment. Screw-on cups thread onto a screw-type prophy angle, and snap-on cups press onto a snap-on (button) angle. Check which type your angle or attachment takes, then see our screw-on prophy cups or snap-on prophy cups if you need another type.
Should I choose soft or firm prophy cups?
Choose by feel. Soft cups are more flexible and flare against the tooth more easily. Firm cups are stiffer and hold their shape.
Prophy cup or prophy brush: which do I need?
It depends on the surface. Cups are commonly used on smooth tooth surfaces, and brushes on chewing surfaces with pits and grooves. See our prophy brushes.
What is the difference between a prophy cup and a prophy angle?
The angle is the attachment that holds and turns the cup; the cup is the part that touches the tooth. These latch cups need a latch-type attachment. If you prefer a single-use angle, see our disposable prophy angles.
Are prophy cups disposable?
Yes. These cups are disposable: use one per patient and throw it away.
