Frequently asked questions
What is a prophy cup?
A prophy cup is the small, flexible cup that carries prophy paste and polishes teeth during a dental cleaning (prophylaxis). It turns on a prophy angle driven by a slow-speed handpiece.
Will screw-on prophy cups fit my prophy angle?
Only if your angle takes screw-on (threaded) cups, so check your angle's instructions first. Latch-type and snap-on angles need different cups: see our latch-type prophy cups and snap-on prophy cups.
Should I choose soft or firm prophy cups?
Choose by feel. Soft cups flex more and flare against the tooth easily; firm cups are stiffer and keep their shape.
Prophy cup or prophy brush: which do I need?
It depends on the surface. Cups are commonly used on smooth tooth surfaces and brushes on chewing surfaces with pits and grooves. See our prophy brushes.
What is the difference between a prophy cup and a prophy angle?
The angle holds and turns the cup; the cup is the part that touches the tooth. These cups need a screw-type angle. If you would rather use a single-use angle, see our disposable prophy angles.
Are screw-on prophy cups disposable?
Yes. They are disposable: use one per patient and throw it away.
